The Southern Crescent Sexual Assault Center (SCSAC),
formerly known as the Clayton Rape Crisis Center, opened
its doors in 1994 in order to provide much needed services
to survivors of sexual assault in the South Metro area.
This grassroots collaborative effort involved law enforcement
agencies, social service agencies, medical professionals,
school personnel and the Clayton County District Attorney's
Office as well as a handful of dedicated volunteers.
The center was staffed entirely by volunteers until
August of 1995 when the Clayton County District Attorney's
Office provided funding for a full-time program director.
Also occurring in 1995, Southern Regional Medical Center
(SRMC) formed an in-house task force to address procedures
and protocols in providing medical services to sexual
assault victims. Based on the findings of the task force,
the hospital formed a community partnership with SCSAC
in order to provide the highest quality comprehensive
care to survivors of sexual assault. Since that time,
SCSAC has provided hospital accompaniment 24 hours a
day, seven days a week for victims seen at SRMC. Today,
SCSAC offers these same services to Piedmont Fayette
Hospital and Henry Medical Hospital. In October 2000,
SCSAC officially became a private, independent, non-profit
organization.
Over the past nine years, SCSAC's services have expanded to include the following:
- A 24-hour crisis line
- Hospital, police and court accompaniment in all three counties
- Victim advocacy
- Individual counseling and support groups
- Community education programs for children, youth and adults of all ages
- A resource referral network
All of our services are provided free of charge. SCSAC
currently operates offices in Clayton and Henry counties
where services are provided to an average of 40 clients
each month. |
